DETROIT – Chevrolet will help power a little snail named Turbo in the upcoming DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (Nasdaq: DWA) feature film bearing his name.

The collaboration between Chevrolet and DreamWorks Animation will engage fans in the U.S. and select international markets and serve to enhance the film’s authentic racing environment.
As part of this alliance, Chevrolet has created a special real-life replica of a custom Camaro featured in Turbo. The comprehensive campaign also includes television, print, and online advertising, a social media push and dealership activations in key markets. WARREN - GM’s Lordstown Stamping plant is the first and largest North American GM facility to convert all of its lighting to high-efficiency LED bulbs. The switch will save the plant more than $800,000 overall annually, while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 8,500 tons. This is equivalent to annual energy use of 397 homes.
 
“Although replacing more than 1,600 light fixtures is a monumental task, we’ve now reduced the plant’s energy consumption more than 80 percent,” said Steve Rhoades, GM Lordstown Complex Manufacturing Engineering Director. “This project falls in line with Lordstown’s energy efficiency goals, as well as the company’s environmental vision.”

DETROIT – The General Motors Foundation is pledging $50,000, and Chevrolet is donating a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup to Forgotten Harvest to assist with the organization’s “Help 4 Oklahoma” campaign to get supplies to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and help those impacted by this week’s devastating tornadoes.

To implement "Help 4 Oklahoma," Forgotten Harvest is partnering with the GM Foundation, +Chevrolet , ArtVan, +WDIV-TV Local 4/ClickOnDetroit.com, WJR AM 760 and The Detroit Media Partnership. 

“We will be collecting shelf-stable foods, and medical and hygiene products for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma,” said Susan Goodell,” CEO of Forgotten Harvest. “Vehicles will be instrumental in the implementation of this effort and we thank Chevrolet for this generous donation.”

LANSING, Mich. – General Motors today announced a $44.5 million investment to build a Logistics Optimization Center at its Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, creating 200 new jobs.  

The investment will be used to build a 400,000-square-foot building adjacent to the plant to sequence and assemble parts to make manufacturing more flexible at the site. Lansing Grand River is home of the Cadillac ATS, the North American Car of the Year.

DETROIT – The Buick brand celebrates its 110th birthday this weekend. After a few years of experimenting with automobiles built at his home in Detroit, David Dunbar Buick – a former plumbing inventor and businessman – incorporated the Buick Motor Company on May 19, 1903. A State of Michigan historic site marker outside General Motors Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center commemorates the day.
 
The first production vehicle, the Buick Model B, was offered to retail customers the following year. Today, Buick produces a range of luxury vehicles including the Encore and Enclave crossovers and the LaCrosse, Regal and Verano sedans.

DETROIT - A theme that I have been writing and speaking about a lot recently is the obligation of industry CEOs to lead their companies in reducing heat-trapping emissions and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy – not only because of the essential societal benefits but because it’s good for business.

In a recent talk I gave at the University of Massachusetts Amherst titled, “Needed: Skillful Capitalists to Lead Us to a Low-Carbon Future,” I argued that smartly crafted laws and regulations designed to address major problems (like climate change) often create new markets for American-made goods and services.

DETROIT – The General Motors Foundation is pledging $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity to help victims of the recent tornadoes in five Texas counties. The funds will be used to help restore neighborhoods devastated by Wednesday’s storms.

“Helping Texas residents rebuild and repair their homes is a critical priority for Habitat for Humanity International in the aftermath of the recent tornadoes,” said Selim Bingol, vice president, GM Global Communications and Public Policy and Chairman of the GM Foundation. “Through the $500,000 grant from the GM Foundation and the recently donated Chevrolet Express Vans, we are helping the organization immediately provide financial and other important resources to those in need.”

Habitat for Humanity is assessing the impact on affordable housing in the affected areas and will assist with clean up, repairs and new construction efforts.

DETROIT - In February, Chevrolet unveiled the latest addition to its lineup of greener vehicles – the 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel. Based on the EPA highway estimate and its fuel tank capacity, the Cruze Diesel has an estimated range of 700 highway miles on one tank of diesel fuel. GM energy engineer Tessa Baughman’s experience with Chevy’s Clean-D-Machine can attest to the EPA estimate. In fact, she exceeded it.

The Milford Global Data Center and the Warren Global Data Center will replace a network of 23 data centers operated by GM and three information technology suppliers around the world. DETROIT – Buick production lines have been rolling for 110 consecutive years but for a short period during World War II, the vehicles produced looked decidedly different. In February of 1942, the last civilian car left a Buick facility before full attention was placed on engineering and producing aircraft engines, ammunition and the M18 tank destroyer, better known as the Hellcat.

The M18 originated in the design studio of Harley Earl, whose team also worked extensively on early camouflage paint. Even the Hellcat logo on the M18’s front corner and patches worn by its crew was designed by Earl’s staff. Flanked by the words “Seek, Strike, Destroy,” it depicts a wildcat biting down on crushed treads, signifying the Hellcat’s mission of targeting enemy tanks.

DUBAI – The Chevrolet Camaro SS has joined the Dubai Police fleet of vehicles – the first Camaro to be used by a police force in the Middle East.

INDIANAPOLIS – The all-new, seventh-generation 2014 Corvette Stingray will serve as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, leading the field to green at the start of the 97th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” on Sunday, May 26, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It marks a record 12th time the Corvette has served as the Pace Car, starting in 1978.

DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) sold 237,646 vehicles in the United States in April, up 11 percent compared with a year ago.  Retail sales increased 10 percent, fleet sales were up 16 percent and the fleet mix was 28 percent of total sales.

DETROIT – The all-new 2014 Sierra arrives this summer with available advanced active safety features never offered to full-size pickup truck owners, including Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. The manner by which alerts from the system are delivered to the driver is equally innovative, thanks to GMC’s optional Safety Alert Seat.

With the Safety Alert Seat, Sierra owners get feedback transmitted as a vibration through the surface of the driver’s seat bottom cushion. When the Lane Departure Warning system’s camera detects the Sierra is leaving a lane without a turn signal active in that direction, a vibration in the left or right seat bolster directs the driver’s attention to the side of the lane encroachment. When a potential collision is detected ahead by the Forward Collision Alert system, both sides of the seat vibrate.

SHANGHAI - Last year, China’s vehicle market, the world’s largest, reached a record 19.4 million units. Analysts expect China sales to grow another 7-8 percent in 2013, and to continue growing strongly for many years to come.

At GM, we and our joint-venture partners are capitalizing on this growth by introducing 60 new models or major upgrades in China between 2011 and 2015, including 17 this year alone.

OKLAHOMA - In January, Chevrolet announced new investments in projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a part of its carbon reduction program, which seeks to prevent up to 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the earth’s atmosphere. The projects are as varied as they are innovative, from helping truckers avoid idling to forest conservation. Chevy is investing in renewable energy projects, too (a subject GM is very familiar with).

According to Pike Research, almost 200,000 plug-in electric cars and trucks equipped with vehicle-to-building (V2B) technology will be sold through 2020. The company said that from 2012 to 2020, investment in that space will total $279 million.

That’s a lot of money. V2B and its vehicle-to-grid (V2G) cousin show a lot of promise, even if not a lot of commercial application yet. Some years ago, in California, I watched an electric meter spin back as the battery pack in a Google-sponsored Toyota Prius returned power to the grid. The company teamed up on V2G with Pacific Gas & Electric, which remains interested in it.

NEW YORK – The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV is  the industry benchmark in retail electric vehicle efficiency with a combined city/highway EPA estimated range of 82 miles when fully charged and an EPA-estimated combined city/highway 119 MPGe fuel economy equivalent.

Compared to the average new vehicle, the Spark EV can potentially save its owners up to $9,000 in fuel cost over five years. The Spark EV goes on sale this summer in California and Oregon.

SHANGHAI – General Motors is making an initial donation of RMB 4 million ($647,000) to support relief and rebuilding efforts in Ya’an, Sichuan, which was struck by an earthquake on April 20. 

In addition, GM employees across China are being encouraged to contribute. For every RMB 1 (16 cents) donated by employees, GM will donate an additional RMB 2 (32 cents).

“We and our employees hope our donations will enable residents to rebuild their lives quickly,” said Bob Socia, president, GM China, and Chief Country Operations Officer, China, India and ASEAN.

DETROIT – The General Motors Foundation is providing a $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross to aid emergency management officials with relief efforts, to help provide shelter and meals to those in need and help the organization prepare for and respond to disasters in Texas.

“The recent events in Boston and West, Texas, and the severe flooding impacting many Midwestern states remind us that disasters can happen at any time and it is critical that the Red Cross have the funds to help communities prepare and respond,” said David Staszak, divisional vice president of Development at the American Red Cross. Annually, the Red Cross responds to more than 4,000 disasters in the state of Texas assisting nearly 6,000 families.
