Hek Waves2,022It's quite a while ago, since +Barbara BM shared this amazing circle of artists, art lovers and art sharers. Now, since I've "used" this circle for a few moths, I think, it's worth to reshare it - extended with a couple of art loving friends from my own circles. Luis Roca5,477I've adjusted the Art + Design Distilled Circle with some significant changes, removing a few pages that posted redundant content and a few sharers who — um, we'll simply say it turns out they have an overly broad definition of art when it comes to the nude female. — Several fantastic artists and writers on the visual arts have been added. Luis Roca5,101Art + Design Distilled on Google+ has been slightly modified. There are one or two additions but will always stay around this size as some profiles may drop off in activity and with that, I'll move them out of the circle while I continue looking for new ones to add. This way when I share it every few weeks, it will always be a circle that consistently provides good work and discussions.Enjoy and Happy Friday everyone.Luis#circleshare   #sharedcircles   #art   #design   #graphicdesign  2013-08-02 14:25:2858104CC G+
Luis Roca4,937Art + Design Distilled on Google+ is a dense slice of some of the best artists, curators and active commenters of the visual arts.On Wednesday I posted a small circle I have enjoyed for a long while and asked for help to make it better. A few people came up with great suggestion and circles. Those suggestions led me to thousands of profiles I was reviewing up until early this morning to create this circle.I kept it smaller than most other circle shares but incredibly varied with a focus on quality streams and discussions. There are familiar faces and pages that have been circled by over a million people alongside artists that have been hooped less than five hundred times. This process ended up being far more rewarding than I could have imagined. I never created a circle like this to share and really regret not doing it sooner. I have met so many great creative people and added them to my circles. To all of you who recently circled me: Hello :)Enjoy the great visuals in your streams and Happy Friday everyone.Luis #sharedcircles     #sharedcircle     #art   #design  2013-07-19 13:22:1253233CC G+

Mike Kelley, Educational Complex, 1995—This architectural model contains small versions of every school Kelley attended throughout his life, as well as his childhood home. All of the structures are merged into a single, dense compound of buildings that also contains several blank or “unremembered” zones.

MOCA presents Cinema Vezzoli. Rife with art-historical and autobiographical references and showcasing the artist’s love of embroidery, classic European cinema, and Hollywood stardom, the works explore the modern-day obsession with celebrity. Using the language of commodification, Vezzoli creates parodies of mass media and popular culture as it infiltrates the private lives of public figures.

Through film, video and performance, Eugene Kotlyarenko explores the riotous consequences of contemporary miscommunication. Curating for MOCAtv the Feast of Burden director takes a closer look at trolling, or the art of online pranking. Kotlyarenko identifies an antecedent of trolling in an on-air deconstruction of a late night talk show, a more typical manifestation ("griefing") in a first-person shooter game, and a brutal if insightful compilation of Russian road rage. Taken together, the clips place trolling in a tradition of subversiveness and creative hostility. http://bit.ly/YouTubeCuratedByEugeneKotlyarenko

Mike Kelley’s Kandors (2007-11) are scaled-down representations of the fictional capital of Krypton, Superman’s home planet. In the comic book narrative, Superman found the city, which had been shrunken by arch-villain Brainiac, and kept it inside a glass enclosure at his secret hideaway, the Fortress of Solitude. Kelley analyzed versions of Kandor rendered by different artists throughout the long history of the DC Comics’ serial. He then constructed three-dimensional models that duplicate the size and detail of the diverse stylizations of Kandor found in different episodes. Kelley’s original idea for the Kandors project was to develop a web-based community of Superman aficionados, dedicated to the utopian image of Kandor, along with an actual conference for fans of the superhero.

The humor and pathos of aging is central to the work of Los Angeles-based filmmaker and writer Carson Mell. Known for his animated sagas Chonto and Tarantula, as well as his contributions to HBO's Eastbound & Down, Mell's interest extends naturally to YouTube, where he publishes his films and which he is generally "sort of obsessed with." Curating for MOCAtv, Mell finds the meaning of life in a baby's laugh, unique humor in his favorite cartoon Apollo Gauntlet, and inspiration in "humble" music videos by Spookey Ruben and his favorite Los Angeles band White Dove. http://bit.ly/MOCAtvYouTubeCuratedByCarsonMell

Mike Kelley’s work grapples with mass culture’s representations, undermining sacrosanct subjects (history, art, philosophy, religion, science) and their practitioners through popular culture’s leveling and debasing inscriptions. "Shock", pictured here, is part of Kelley’s "Monkey Island" (1982–83), a performance and installation made up of a sexually charged adolescent cosmology of insects and monkeys. According to Los Angeles sculptor Liz Larner, the art form that sculpture is most related to is dance. While dance is movement that a viewer watches, sculpture is an art form that entices the viewer to move. For Untitled (Wall) (2000-2001), on view at MOCA Grand Avenue through March 31, 2014, Larner manipulates appearances of density and weight through a delicate construction of interlocking painted steel cubes. The work reveals a wealth of perspectives and colors through the prism of photography and with repeated views. http://bit.ly/MOCAtvLizLarnerRoomToLive

There is no such thing as a characteristic work by Liz Larner. Based in Los Angeles, the forms in her sculptures run the gamut from the rigid to the regular, the amorphous and the erratic. Likewise, her materials have ranged from the expected steel and wood to the more fantastical, such as clay and found objects covered in gorgeous quartz glazes. Congratulations to Steve McQueen for his Best Picture Oscar! MOCA is proud to have Drumroll (1998) in our permanent collection. In this video work he affixed three cameras to a construction-grade metal barrel—two on either end and one inside—and rolled it through the streets of Manhattan. Projected as a video installation, the triptych offers a simulation of being trapped, recreating the experience of an uncontrollable, endless journey dictated by the physical rhythms of a city. Drumroll would win McQueen the prestigious Turner Prize.

Touring stand-up comedian Rory Scovel directs himself in a satirical travelogue titled "Everywhere at Once" for Art + Comedy on MOCAtv. "I'm in and out of towns even before I've felt like I was even there," says Scovell.
