From East of Borneo: Mike Kelley’s “cross-gender/cross-genre” on pop, performance, and gender.

“David Bowie is the great example here. He adopts and throws away personas as the seasons change, always reinventing himself for the market. In this sense, he is a mirror of our culture of planned obsolescence.”

RIP David Bowie.

This Thursday, Pae White speaks as part of our Artists on Artists series at MOCA Grand.

Artist Pae White draws from the margins of art history, often utilizing techniques and forms associated with craft, defying the boundaries between art, design, and architecture, and prompting viewers to pay closer attention to that which is normally overlooked. She will speak about Manny Farber, whose work is currently on view in The Art of Our Time, as part of Artists on Artists, a new series that builds upon MOCA’s tradition of examining works and exhibitions through the voice of the artist.

This Thursday: In conjunction with Viennese Actionist works on display in The Art of Our Time, Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA presents films and videos by VALIE EXPORT and Kurt Kren. Kren, revered for his innovative form of experimental cinema, trained his camera and hyper-rapid editing technique on artists Guenther Brus and Otto Muehl. Later that decade, EXPORT staged her important, and often incendiary, actions on the street and for the camera, forging a new feminist language of image making.

Nearly 7 years in the making, Matthew Barney: RIVER OF FUNDAMENT is Barney's largest filmic undertaking since his renowned five-part epic The Cremaster Cycle (1994 to 2002). The eponymous exhibition brings together 14 large-scale sculptures weighing up to 25 tons, drawings, photographs, and vitrines that were inspired by or made in conjunction with the film. MOCA's presentation of the exhibition will include new works made since the film's premiere, which exemplify Barney's continued exploration of its themes. These works serve as physical manifestations and remnants of the ideas and performances throughout the titular symphonic film collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler.

Matthew Barney: RIVER OF FUNDAMENT opens at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA on September 13th.

Kahlil Joseph: “Most all histories in black cinema aren't really representations of us, I think most people who know black people on any level know that to be true. We've excelled as a community and as a people and as a culture in every other art form in a way that's just amazing."

"It's almost like Silicon Valley in the 80s and 90s: the black community is where all the great ideas are, it's where the next generation of filmmakers are going to come from, it's what's going to save movies. Once we start making movies in the same way that we make music, it'll be undeniable. Once we're able to represent ourselves—not even represent ourselves but to express ourselves—in the way that we feel and we think, then I don't even know what to say.”
