Investment or Hyperspeed Electronic Poker?
This linked article by Michael Wellman, published June 14, 2013, reminded me of a quotation from Alvin Toffler's Revolutionary Wealth, published 7 years ago. The article talks about millisecond trading and price disparities across markets, and it mentions a study that found such trading "takes profits away from regular investors and ... reduces the overall profit of the system." Wellman suggests that it might be in the nation's best interest "to move to a system where all trades happen at discrete points in time — say once per second — rather than continuously."

Google Continues to Lead the Way
Another project from Google's lab X is being tested in Tekapo, New Zealand. Google plans to launch balloons 12 miles high into the stratosphere that will help to bring the Internet to 4.8 billion people currently not connected.

Parking Space Boston - Sold for $560,000!
I've heard this story from multiple local sources (i live in Revere, MA), including this article in the Boston Globe. It's hard to believe that the space with the umbrella person sold yesterday at auction for $560,000. (A photograph of the space is in the linked Boston Globe story.)

E.O. Wilson has some good thoughts here on the inherent struggle between our instinctual drive to compete as individuals and our drive to collaborate as a group. 

The drive to join is deeply ingrained, a result of a complicated evolution that has led our species to a condition that biologists call eusociality. “Eu-,” of course, is a prefix meaning pleasant or good: euphony is something that sounds wonderful; eugenics is the attempt to improve the gene pool. May Day Havana, 2013.  The perfect car at the right moment amidst 400,000 people.  The parade has no spectators, only participants, so if you are there, you are IN the parade. I was IN the parade. A Question for Google Photo Enthusiasts
Is there a way to upload photos and put them in an album without sharing them to the "public stream," yet allowing them to be viewed by anyone in the public if anyone is interested in looking through my photos?

I thought that we could do that once, but now i don't see a way to get the photos in a "public" album without sharing them in a public post.

For example, i do not want to share this photo of Buzzy, our precious cat, to my public stream now (but here it goes anyway), but i would like cat lovers who may be checking out my photo albums to be able to see this photo in my Buzzy album.

Hello, all! I am a musician and technology enthusiast from Grand Rapids, MI. I have been selected by Google for the Glass Explorer program. I believe that if I am able to successfully acquire Glass, it will open up many new opportunities for me, of which I am very much in need. Unfortunately, however, I do not have the necessary funds to cover the cost of the device ($1500), which must be paid for by June 13. 

So far I have raised about $200, but still have a long way to go.

My plans for use of the device include:

*Presenting "the musician's life" (rehearsals, songwriting, travel, performances) to the world from a unique, 1st person perspective.

*Educating the public about Google Glass and wearable computing in general, including capabilities and good etiquette.

If you could spare anything at all to help me fund the purchase, it would beg... meer »

Why the Guardian’s ‘Matrix’ analogy fails.

Nothing much happens in the UK and the country has very little impact on the outside world. 

At least, that’s the false belief you could come to if you never went to the UK and never learned anything about how the world works. 

Likewise, if you never visited Google+ and didn’t learn how it really works, you could conclude that the network has “little visible engagement, pretty much no impact on the outside world,” as Guardian writer +Charles Arthur has done in a misleading column recently.

Buzzy - Sleep Flying (like "Super-Cat")
Our cat Buzzy, whose head is stuffed against the chair-arm with his "super-cat" flying "arms" extended. No doubt, Buzzy in his dream is flying over his extensive land holdings to survey them for a potential new resting spot. Haha. (We took this photo a couple of years ago, but Buzzy is frequently seen in this position when in his favorite chair, which also happens to be my favorite chair — a chair i seldom have a chance to sit in, because King Buzzy is there.)

Today, May 29, 2013, marks 96 years since the birth of President John F. Kennedy. JFK was the first president to have been born in the 20th century. President Kennedy started the Peace Corps and set the U.S. on a course to land a man on the moon before 1970.

In late May, 1962, a "slightly" inebriated Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy, in what has become, perhaps, the most viewed "Happy Birthday" tune in history.

Only 20 Hours to Getting Good at a New Skill

Josh Kaufman, author of The First 20 Hours, gives a 20 minute TEDx Talk about his book. Josh reveals that his research shows it only takes about 20 hours to get reasonably good at a new skill, although it may require 10,000 hours of practice to eventually become the best at it. Today in History: May 27, 1941.
President Roosevelt proclaims "unlimited national emergency."

On this day, May 27 — 72 years ago today — U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced a state of "unlimited national emergency" in what historians now understand was a preparatory step for engaging the U.S. in World War II. 

On this date, President Roosevelt was primarily focused on Nazi Germany's world domination threats. He promised to protect shipping in the Atlantic Ocean and to continue humanitarian and military aid to Britain. Just over 7 months later, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the U.S. declared war against Japan on December 8, 1941. Three days later, the U.S. Congress unanimously declared war against Germany as well.

This Day in History: May 26, 1805
At Milan Cathedral on May 26, 1805 — 208 years ago today — Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned King of Italy. Napoleon, after becoming emperor of France, engaged in a series of wars that involved every major European power. After a streak of victories, Napoleon secured for France a dominant position in continental Europe. Napoleon spread his sphere of influence by appointing French friends and family members to rule European countries, including imposing himself as monarch on Italy.

1805 doesn't sound that long ago to me. A lot can change in 200 years. And, for Napoleon, who ended up defeated and exiled from his homeland, a lot changed for him in the next 10 years following his peak power.

One-third of kids overweight; two-thirds of adults overweight
Susan B. Wilson interviews Amanda Bruce, a Childhood Obesity and imaging specialist at UMKC and Jennifer D. Lundgren, Clinical Ph.D. Associate Professor, also at UMKC. Both work on the issue of how psychology plays into childhood and adult obesity.

Both Lundgren and Bruce state the current food industry makes food high in salt, sugar and fat because they are addictive. Eating these foods changes your decision making and actually lowers your self-control.
